The Amoud University Somaliland was established in 1997 and was the first institution of higher learning to be established in Somaliland, Infact the first in the Somali context after the collapse of the military dictatorship in 1991. This was a crucial period as tens of thousands of young men and women whose education was interrupted by the civil war in Somalia were roaming in the streets and were looking for education. Amoud University is, therefore, regarded as a pioneer institution in the Somali setting and currently its student population of close to 4000 students come from all over Somali speaking regions of the Horn of Africa. It is also regarded as the most credible Somali institution of higher learning in the area.
The university has 9 faculties / schools: School of Business and Public Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Faculty of nursing, Faculty of ICT and the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment consists of the following institutes/departments: Department of animal husbandry, Department of agronomy, Department of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, Department of Horticulture, Department of crop protection, Department of Agricultural Engineering & Technology und Department of aquatic development.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment offers 2 Master programmes:

- Master of Pastoral, Range and Wildlife Management
